ireworks manufacturers use a variety of compounds to create those vivid colors you see during a 4th of July fireworks show.
Metals like magnesium will create brilliant white sparkles. Strontium has a brilliant red color that you may have seen in road flares. My favorite is copper which will produce a bluish and greenish color when heated.
